Essential Eligibility Criteria

Company-wide recreational paddling rentals and activities

These criteria describe the essential abilities required for safe participation in Anderson’s Outdoor Adventures kayak, canoe, and stand-up paddleboard rentals and paddling trips. They apply to all customers, with or without disabilities. Participants may meet a criterion independently or with a reasonable accommodation, appropriate equipment, or assistance when consistent with actual safety requirements.

Purpose and application

Paddling includes foreseeable risks such as capsize, immersion, currents, changing weather, strain, and natural launch conditions. These EECs are not a guarantee that a particular guest can participate in every activity, nor a blanket exclusion based on disability. Staff evaluate activity-specific conditions and accommodation requests individually.

Essential participation criteria

  • Airway and breathing. Maintain breathing and protect the airway during normal participation and reasonably foreseeable immersion, with appropriate accommodation where safe.

  • Flotation equipment. Wear a correctly fitted, legally appropriate personal flotation device and comply with applicable PFD requirements.

  • Safety communication. Receive, understand, and respond to essential safety instructions, directly or through an effective communication method or companion.

  • Entry and exit. Board and leave the chosen craft independently or with reasonable, safely provided assistance at the particular launch.

  • Position and stability. Maintain a safe seated or standing position suitable to the craft, with suitable support or assistance where appropriate.

  • Navigation and control. Control or meaningfully participate in controlling the craft, independently or with a capable paddling partner where appropriate.

  • Emergency response. Respond to emergency directions and participate in a feasible plan for capsize, water entry, rescue, and return to shore, with reasonable assistance as appropriate.

  • Conduct and conditions. Follow legitimate safety instructions, applicable boating and park rules, and make staff aware when assistance is needed or conditions become unsafe.

Available assistance and reasonable accommodations

Our staff routinely move and position watercraft, stabilize boats for boarding, assist customers entering and leaving a craft when safe, and assist with launch and push-off. These services are offered without regard to disability. Depending on the request and circumstances, we may provide extra time, alternative verbal or electronic instructions, access to the Gilchrist Blue Springs roller-and-rail kayak launch, a tandem kayak when available, or participation with a companion. Staff do not promise unsafe lifts or transfers beyond their training, available staffing, and equipment.

Launch and trip differences

The primary Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park operation has an accessible kayak launch reached by sidewalk and boardwalk. Other public launch or takeout points can have paved ramps, docks, slopes, or natural surfaces and do not necessarily offer the same accessible features. Off-site public parks used for some trips include Poe Springs Park (Alachua County) and Santa Fe River Park (Gilchrist County). Neither park is owned or managed by Anderson’s Outdoor Adventures.

Some trips use a shuttle bus that presently has no wheelchair lift or wheelchair securement system. Contact us before booking if an accessible vehicle or a particular launch arrangement is needed. We will review the request and applicable accessible-transportation obligations; this notice does not waive those obligations.

Individual assessment and alternatives

Safety decisions must be based on actual conditions, objective risk, available modifications, and the individual circumstances—not assumptions about disability. If a particular activity cannot be performed safely even with reasonable modification, management will explain the concern and discuss an available alternative when appropriate. No medical diagnosis is required for a routine accommodation request.

Customer responsibilities

  • Follow safety briefings, laws, park rules, and staff directions.

  • Wear required flotation equipment and use rental equipment as instructed.

  • Share practical information necessary to plan safe assistance or emergency response; disclosure of a diagnosis is not ordinarily required.

  • Review the trip-specific launch, takeout, distance, water conditions, and transportation information before booking.
